Patwa and Cell Phones 876- 369-6346

Have to love the fact that Yvonne got her first cell phone and is now so totally addicted that we can all laugh out loud. All the 20 something volunteers think this is hilarious too.

Officially started our study of the local Patwa language. Finding this quite fun too. Patwa is spoken by over 90 percent of the folks here and is virtually unrecognizable to us. So we have much to learn if we plan to integrate. The Queen's English is spoken as well. But if you want to be accepted in the full manner that PCV aspire to then the accusation of the language is necessary.

Seems that Patwa is struggling to find its way into the mainstream. Most of the young children come to school speaking Patwa. They are then asked to learn english without the benefit of becoming literate in Patwa. Up until recently there was no written aspect to the language. In the long standing tradition of the PC we have some amazing trainers. In fact, our group, known as Group 79 because we are the 79th group to enter since 1962 here, is only the second group to be trained in the language. It is all quite exciting and we feel privileged to be some of the few people outside and inside Jamaica that will be fully literate in this new language.

A stranger I met on the road today responded to my "hello" with "blessings."

So I sign off with "Blessings"-BC

Brian, interesting that Yvonne leaves the US, then gets a cell.

Hey! That's such a funny pic! Are we able to call that # with a phone card or something, or would you rather keep it emergencies only? I have a couple of bills (taxes for both the Palmer and Kodiak properties). They are both due by mid August, and are for large amounts ( I wouldn't be able to pay them). Edward Jones thing is done, plus another check in the bank (300? from Medical payment). I will email you amounts..let me know what to do via email....LOVE YOU GUYS! Con is in tonight-we are all having dinner together at "Our Inn" he had a good trip-nice and hot weather today!
